Federico Acal (1981, Spain). Lives and works in Antwerp. He obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Polytechnic University of Valencia. He has also studied at the Bauhaus University in Germany and at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, USA. He obtained a master in Artistic and Production and Research from the University of Barcelona. He was an artist resident at Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten (HISK) in Ghent, Belgium.
Acal’s recent work approaches different aspects of painting employing subject matter that ranges from renaissance perspective to science fiction to rituals and magic. Using dramatized and theatralized settings for his work, Federico Acal employs these elements to navigate through different systems and structures of representation. His work is motivated by fantasy, science fiction and Art History as technological tools for creating images.
His works have been exhibited at Extra City (Antwerp), BORG (Antwerp), HISK (Ghent), Fondazione Sandretto re Rebaudengo (Turin), Biennal Fundación (Madrid) and the 55th October Salon Belgrade City Museum (Belgrade).
